01 / 06Bengal has had two old capitals. Sonargaon, the "City of Gold", governed the delta from the thirteenth century, grew rich on muslin and river trade, and left behind the ruins of Panam City. Then in 1610 the Mughals moved the seat of power to a riverside town they renamed Jahangirnagar — the city we now call Dhaka. This day is spent in that second capital: the Mughal and colonial quarter south of the modern city, where the street plan has barely changed and the buildings are still in daily use rather than roped off.
We collect you from your hotel in the morning and start at Ahsan Manzil, the Nawabs' pink palace above the Buriganga. From there the day is mostly walking: the Star Mosque and its broken-china mosaics, the Armenian Church and its graves, the goldsmiths and conch-shell bangle makers of Shankhari Bazaar — a lane barely three metres wide. We stop for a proper Bangladeshi lunch, then go down to Sadarghat in the afternoon, when the triple-deck launches are loading and the small rowing boats are ferrying commuters home across the river. You are back at your hotel by early evening. Comfortable shoes matter more than anything else you bring.
