Brief history
Sonargaon was the heart of Bengal long before modern Dhaka rose to prominence. From the 13th to early 17th century, it served as the capital of the Sultanate of Bengal and later as a major administrative center under Mughal rule. The name means "City of Gold," reflecting its wealth from trade, muslin weaving, and river commerce. Though the capital eventually shifted to Dhaka (then known as Jahangirnagar), Sonargaon's legacy lives on in its mosques, folk-art museum, and the ruins of Panam City. Today the area offers a quieter window into the region's past, contrasting with the bustle of Old Dhaka. This tour connects that heritage with the living streets, mosques, and riverfront of the old city.
About This Tour
In the morning, after hotel pickup, your guide takes you to Ahsan Manzil — the grand Pink Palace overlooking the Buriganga River. From there, you wander on foot through the narrow lanes of Old Dhaka, visiting the Star Mosque, the Armenian Church, and the colorful Shankhari Bazaar. When it is time to rest, sit down for a traditional Bangladeshi lunch at a local restaurant. In the afternoon, head to Sadarghat and the Buriganga waterfront to watch ferries, wooden boats, and everyday river life at one of the busiest ports in the world.
