01 / 03Northeast Bangladesh looks like a different country. The flat delta gives way to low hills, and the hills are carpeted in tea — estates planted under the British in the 1850s and still worked by the descendants of the labourers brought in to plant them. Srimangal is the centre of it, and also the gateway to Lawachara, a patch of semi-evergreen rainforest holding hoolock gibbons, and to Madhabpur Lake with its lotus beds. Sylhet town is the other half of the trip: a pilgrimage city built around the shrine of Hazrat Shah Jalal, and the place most of Britain's Bangladeshi community traces its roots to.
Day one is the drive from Dhaka to Sylhet — long, but the countryside does the work — with the shrine and the town in the afternoon. Day two heads to Srimangal through the estates, with a stop for the seven-layer tea, and an afternoon in Lawachara listening for gibbons. Day three is the slow one, which is the point: Madhabpur Lake, tribal villages in the hills, tea-garden walks and not much of a schedule. Day four is a morning at leisure and the drive back to Dhaka. Three nights in three-star hotels, breakfast included, lunches and dinners left open so we can eat wherever the day puts us.
